Gas Assessment Training Centre turned to technology to improve their training and make sure that their gas engineers are trained in highly dangerous scenarios and are aware of the consequences of not following procedures when reacting to a situation.
Training gas engineers is dangerous in risk filled environments. GATC needed a safe solution where mistakes can be made with no consequences to the trainee or instructor.
A Virtual Training Solution for a Dangerous Job
They decided that Virtual Reality was the most effective technology for the challenges they are facing. This technology allows them to train gas engineers in dangerous situations in a safe and controlled environment. The software collaboratively created with CEMET has two scenarios; the first is to educate individuals about household objects deemed to be a gas hazard, such as broken cables, gas fire, gas hob etc.
Expansive Scenarios for Emergency Responders
The second scenario used in a controlled training situation would be a series of sequences that a gas emergency responder would follow to ensure the safety of the home. This would include a number of actions such as opening windows and turning the gas supply off. Certain decisions that the trainee would make could result in disaster. This new way of training makes sure that trainees are fully aware of the effect of certain decisions, not only for the home but for themselves.
An Optimised Training Process Utilising a Low Cost Headset
This software is built for the Oculus go which is a standalone headset. This headset was chosen because it does not rely on a device which keeps cost down and allows more than one trainee on the course to participate at the same time.
Gas Assessment Training Centre are adopting this technology within their training programme and are upgrading gas responder’s skills in dangerous situations but in a safe way.
