Developing the “Mediverse” with a medical training startup

Azize Naji and his medical training business Goggleminds had an idea. Expanding the concept of the “metaverse” to develop virtual reality training for medical students.

Goggleminds came from a background primarily in the public and private healthcare sectors. Their aim was to provide more immersive training experiences through virtual reality technology. After developing a VR training platform Azize got in touch with CEMET seeking advice on how to enhance their training platform.

Our advice focused on 3 main areas; updating graphics and environment in the scenario, providing network connectivity to enable multiple trainees to practice simultaneously and developing more immersive and interactive training experiences based on our experience in game design and other training experiences.

The Emergency Scenario

The scenario produced was an emergency paediatric tracheostomy consisting of 2 modes; firstly a timed mode and secondly a sequential mode. Both of which require the trainee to follow the “Emergency Tracheostomy Algorithm”, a step-by-step guide for responders to check and manage the potential problems that are easiest to fix and most likely to resolve the emergency. The algorithm would guide the user to replace the tracheostomy and oxygenate the patient, with the sequence test mode requiring users to complete all of the steps of the algorithm in the exact order as they appear, whilst the timed test mode requires the user to complete the steps within a set timescale or else the patient’s SpO2 levels reach a critically low threshold resulting in a fail.

The app was developed to enable multiple users allowing for a number of trainees and/or observers at the same time. This allows for assessors to help, provide feedback to the trainees or simply observe the actions taking place and pass or fail the trainees.

Since the project, Goggleminds have gone on to win the Wales StartUp Award for Med-Tech. CEMET is proud to continue to support GoggleMinds through the early stages of their development. Collaborating with CEMET was an incredibly valuable experience, which ensured that we could develop, test and deploy our concept much quicker. Fast forward to today, the training app we developed with CEMET has go on to win multiple awards, is being used in the NHS and has been accredited with helping a junior doctor navigate a real medical emergency. We are incredibly grateful for their support which has not only had a tremendous positive impact on Goggleminds, but also on patient safety and care.
