Virtual Reality Construction Health & Safety Training

North Wales-based software company Hollingsworth Group approached CEMET for support in developing its VR health and safety construction training app on their revolutionary Fusion Health and Safety platform.

In 2020 construction and civil engineering company The Hollingsworth Group developed their ground-breaking Fusion Health and Safety platform, a software system that links companies from their headquarters to their most remote sites. The platform now offers a robust Health & Safety Management System and as part of Fusion’s innovative approach to health and safety Hollingsworth brothers looked to digitise and streamline traditional health and safety processes for clients, employees and customers and achieve this through the latest technology, whilst improving the health and safety of employees.

Preparation and excavation

VR training’s ability to improve learning and performance and make the impossible training scenarios possible led to collaborating with CEMET to produce a VR health and safety 4-stage training scenario based around a standard excavation designed as a confined space where the trainee through utilising tools, assessing the virtual environment and interacting with on-site workers of varied roles would prepare and access the excavation in a safe manner.

The impact of communication, examination and actions

To ensure that the training scenario was unique for each trainee objects and equipment were designed to have random defects that would require the trainee to examine them thoroughly in order to guarantee their safety. Onsite non-player characters in the roles of engineers, foremen, drivers and more could carry a range of discussions to allow the user to choose the appropriate dialogue, instructions and requests to perform tasks properly. Failure to carry out the tasks correctly result in hazards playing out on the trainee within the confined space of the excavation.

CEMET has worked with Hollingsworth Brothers to achieve a dazzling first version of their VR app, but their journey will continue and progress as the industry evolves. To find out more about Hollingsworth visit hollingsworthgroup.co.uk and follow them on X (fka twitter) @Hollingsworth99

Having being introduced to CEMET through the Welsh Gov AGP initiative, CEMET & Hollingsworth Bros began to explore the idea of VR training for our company and industry. From our first workshops to the completed Confined space entry VR training, the team at CEMET have produced a cutting edge training programme, something completely new to the industry.
My team and company are proud to have worked alongside such a dedicated & skilful CEMET team. Our next phase for the VR programme will be gain the appropriate accreditation.
